Another Spin Around the Sun: I Started a CHURCH!

Another birthday, another trip around the Sun, and somehow I've ended up starting a church. Yep, an actual, legally registered church. I have the papers, man!

Well, here we are. Another spin around the Sun, and at the ripe old age of 50-something, I've gone and started a CHURCH!

Those of you who have known me for a while probably aren't all that surprised.

I've been a Dudeist Minister for over a decade now. Some of you may remember my travels around the world with my Little Lebowski, taking photographs of him wherever I went. What started as a bit of fun turned into years of adventures, conversations, and some wonderfully strange encounters.

Over the years, I occasionally joked about starting a church of my own.

Well, the joke got serious.

It's real. It's official. I have the papers, man!

We are now officially the Little Lebowski Church, Inc., or LLC.INC for short. :)

The World Could Use a Little More Abiding

After returning to America and living here for a few years, one thing has become painfully obvious to me.

Americans need a place to "Take It Easy" like never before.

People are constantly being pitted against each other. There's nonstop fearmongering, outrage, political division, and an endless stream of people telling us who we should be afraid of or angry with today.

And somewhere in all that chaos, it feels like the Big Lebowski is making a bunch of money disappear.

It's exhausting, man.

I spent a good part of my life in Europe, and returning to the States has given me a different perspective on things. There's so much energy spent keeping people angry, afraid, and divided. It sometimes feels like we've forgotten how to simply enjoy being alive and appreciate the people around us.

But here's the thing.

We don't have to participate in all that madness.

We can choose to slow down, connect with each other, and maybe make the world a little less exhausting for everyone.

And that's where this whole church idea comes in.

Enter The Abiding Grove

The idea is pretty simple, really.

What if we could create a place where people could just take a breath?

A place to escape the constant noise for a while. Sit under a tree, enjoy a coffee or tea, listen to some music, have a good conversation, or simply do absolutely nothing.

No pressure. No preaching. No demands to be something you're not.

Just a place where people can relax, recharge, and remember that life doesn't always have to be so damn complicated.

That's the idea behind The Abiding Grove.

The Little Lebowski Church is the organization, and The Abiding Grove is the sanctuary we want to build.

A place where community, creativity, nature, and the simple act of taking it easy can come together.

I've put together a little explanation of the vision, which you can listen to here:

What Is The Abiding Grove?

We've Already Planted the First Seeds

Of course, you don't need a giant piece of land to start making a difference.

So we've started small.

We've already organized our first events, creating little sanctuaries at festivals where people can stop by, have a free coffee or tea, sit down, and relax for a bit.

And you know what? It's working!

We've got a great crew of fellow Abiders who have been helping make these events happen, and more people are getting involved each time.

It's amazing how something as simple as offering someone a place to sit and a cup of coffee can lead to some really wonderful conversations.

Sometimes that's all people need. A moment to feel welcome, without anyone expecting anything from them.

If you're in the Southeastern United States, you should come join us sometime. There's always room for another Abider.

The Bigger Dream

Now, the real dream is to find some land and build a permanent Abiding Grove.

Somewhere with trees, nature, places to gather, and space for all sorts of interesting activities.

Imagine a place where we can host music, art, festivals, workshops, celebrations, camping, and whatever other wonderfully weird ideas our community comes up with.

A sanctuary where people from different backgrounds and walks of life can come together without all the nonsense that seems to divide us everywhere else.

We have a long way to go before we can plant those first trees, but every big idea has to start somewhere.

And I genuinely believe we can make this happen.

Not just for ourselves, but for everyone who could use a little more peace, community, and laughter in their lives.

And Now, My Birthday Request...

Since this is my birthday update, I'm going to ask for something.

I don't need more stuff. I've collected plenty of that over the years.

What I'd really love for my birthday is your help making The Abiding Grove a reality.

Seriously. PLEASE, please, please, help me get this thing growing!

There are a few ways you can help:

If you were thinking of sending me something for my birthday, please consider donating to the church instead.

It would mean a lot to me.

With enough help, I genuinely hope that by this time next year we'll be hosting some amazing events and getting much closer to making the Grove a reality.

And you're all invited!

One More Trip Around the Sun

It's funny how life works out.

Over a decade ago, I was carrying around a little Lebowski figure, taking silly pictures and joking about starting a church.

Now here I am, actually doing it.

But beneath all the Dudeist humor and Lebowski references is something I genuinely believe in.

We need more places where people feel welcome. More opportunities to connect with each other. More time to laugh, relax, create things, and enjoy being alive.

Maybe we can't fix all the world's problems.

But perhaps we can make one little corner of it a better place.

And if we get enough people doing that, who knows what might happen?

Thanks to everyone who's been part of my journey so far. Here's to another spin around the Sun, a few more adventures, and hopefully a whole lot more abiding.

Come Abide With Us.

The Dude Abides,
Gabe Mac
